For many years, boy bands have remained an important staple in the music industry, and it’s no wonder that their crooning which is mostly about love or the search for it continues to gain the attention of fans and admirers. Moreso, bring a group of attractive men and watch the crowd get swooned whether with live performances or in music videos.

On their own, Smash Mouth is a 90’s rock band from California whose membership has changed over the years. Regardless of this, founding members like Steve Harwell, and Greg Camp will continue to be attached to the prowess of the band while its current lineup of Paul De Lisle, Michael Klooster, Randy Cookee, Sean Hurwitz, and Zach Goode are tasked with keeping the band’s music up to date. As it is, we are curious to stay updated about where the Smash Mouth members are.

The Rise of Smash Mouth Band

The band’s beginning can be traced to as far back as 1990 when Steve Harwell and Kevin Coleman met. Four years later, Harwell formed Smash Mouth in California. In order to get a suitable lineup, Coleman who is a drummer who also doubled as Harwell’s manager invited Greg Camp to play the guitar while Paul De Lisle joined as the bassist. This original lineup chose the band’s name from an American football team named Smashmouth.

The Band Achieved Worldwide Fame

Through their joint effort, they started creating an impression with demos like Nervous in the Alley which got the attention of radio stations as well as record labels like Interscope Media. The latter signed the band and was instrumental in the release of their first album Fush Yu Mang in 1997. The album was critically acclaimed and it is unsurprising that it went double platinum. The success of their first album paved the way for other music materials.

In 1998,  they released their second album, Astro Lounge. The album leaned more towards pop music which made many people identify with it. Also, it was supported by the single, All Star, a song that has been used in movies like Shrek. Arguably Astro Lounge is one of the band’s most successful albums.

Ever since, the band has released more than five albums and made timeless songs including; Walkin on the Sun, and Then the Morning Comes.

Where are Smash Mouth Members Now?

Despite the band’s growing fame, the band’s lineup soon started changing as some members left while others joined at different points and for different reasons.

In 1999, Kevin Coleman left due to back problems and was briefly replaced by Michael Urbano followed by Mitch Marine as drummer. Marine left after the Astro Lounge tour thereby creating the room for Urbano’s return to the band. While many thought he would remain for long, the drummer had creative differences with the band and this made him leave again. Marine was brought in temporarily before he was replaced by Jason Sutter. In 2007, Maine returned to the band.

Over the next couple of years, the band continued to achieve worldwide fame as well as changes in the lineup as members like Greg Camp left and returned. Between 2008 and 2011, Camp left the band twice leading to the recruitment of Leroy Miller and later Sean Hurwitz.

In 2021, the band witnessed another lineup change when Steve Harwell, the founder, and frontman retired from the band. He was replaced by Zach Goode as the frontman of the band in 2022.

As of the time of filing this report, Paul De Lisle is the only original member who still sings in the band. Other members in the lineup are;

  • Michael Klooster-He plays the keyboard, vocals
  • Randy Cooke-Drums, percussion, backing vocals
  • Sean Hurwitz-guitar, backing vocals
  • zack Goode-Lead vocals

The Band’s Founder Died of Liver Complications

Apparently, Harwell’s leaving had a lot to do with his health. On September 3, 2023, his critical condition became a news item when it was announced that Harwell was in hospice care and had only days to live. Sadly, he died the following day. According to a statement by the band’s manager, Harwell who was 56 years old died from liver failure at his home in Boise, Idaho.

Prior, Harwell had been battling health challenges with one episode landing him in the hospital after he collapsed on stage in 2016.
