Matthew Paul Saunders was Born a Year After His Mother’s First Lead Role
Matthew Paul Saunders was born sometime in 1971 to Mavis Chin, better known as Mona Hammond, and her first husband.
Hammond was married, first to Michael Sanders from 1965 to 1971. Their marriage started as soon as Mona started her journey to acting and was barely a year into the profession.
The actress was first cast in the 1964 radio-play adaptation of Brother Man, as Minette. She then interpreted the role of Carole in 1964’s A Question of Hell. By 1968, Mona made a TV appearance in the show Softly Softly and then the next year in The Troubleshooters.
It wasn’t until 1970 that she played her first lead role in theatre, though. She had the part of Lady Macbeth in Peter Coe’s African adaptation of the play.
A year later and 6 years into her first marriage, Matthew Paul Saunder was born to the actress. He was her first and only child. Unfortunately, she didn’t remain married to the father of her son for long.
The Guardian and The Sun site both report that Mona and her husband were married for about 22 years, from 1965 to 1987. However, her Wikipedia page and other sites claim she was married to Michael Sanders from 1965 to 1971.
These sites with the latter information also reveal that Mona remarried in 1973 to a man named John Pedler. They also stated that the marriage with John ended in 1987.
Matthew Paul Saunders May not be Mona Hammond’s Son’s Real Name
As already stated, Mona Hammond has one son, agreed, however, the name of the man who is now 53 has been a topic of confusion and debate.
Sites such as standard.co.uk and bbc claim her son’s name is Michael Sanders, possibly named after his father. Others have left his name as Matthew Paul Saunders.
Whatever name the young man goes by, he has chosen to remain unknown and off the radar. Despite being born to a famous actress known for her role as Auntie Susu in Desmonds, Mona Hammond’s son’s life has been quite private. He chose to keep out of the limelight and lead a life out of the media that comes with fame.
It is however known that he has a daughter, making his mother a grandmother before her death. The name of the daughter was simply given as Tallulah and nothing more, no name of the mother or when she was born.
Interestingly, this is not where the confusion about Mona Hammond’s family life ends. The Jamaica-British actress with roots in China has also caused confusion with her age. Upon her death, there were conflicting ages given to her.
Mavis Chin or Mona Hammond was said to have died at age 91, on July 4, 2022. This pegged her date of birth to 1931.
However, a reported statement purportedly from her family members refuted that age. The family member’s claim was that the theatre and film actress died at the age of 87.
