David Meece is an American contemporary Christian musician regarded to be one of the most influential figures in the genre. Having kickstarted his career in 1976, he has gone on to make a great impact in the gospel music scene, enjoying immense success as a singer in the mid-1980s and all through the early 2000s.

Meece had several hits during the peak of his career. In fact,  the musician released more than 30 Top 10 hits, and some of these hits even reached number no. 1. Even though he had some very disconcerting experiences in his childhood, he never let the circumstances surrounding his family and upbringing define who he was and who he is meant to be.

Without a doubt, he has left his footprint in the sands of time. Today, he is highly respected as a man who used his immense talent to influence contemporary Christian musicians.

David Meece’s Early Years

David was born on May 26 of 1952 in Humble, Texas. Apparently, his zodiac sign is Gemini. The identity of his parents remains unknown at the moment.

Growing up, Meece, attended Humble High school and studied at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

The Woman In His Life

David Meece met and married his wife, identified as Debbie Pearce in 1976. The couple met at the Peabody Conservatory of Music where he studied music and she played the viola. They have remained together ever since and are growing stronger.

They have two children; Christopher who is also a tremendous drummer and another called Kelly. Meece and his wife currently live in Franklin, Tennessee.

1. He grew up in an abusive home.

David Meece suffered some challenges as a child. Our findings show that he did not experience the love of a father because his dad was an alcoholic who abused him several times. His father would sit in front of the TV all day drinking. He cared very little for the family.

This made Meece resent his father very much and was very distanced from the older man. He would later forgive his father as an adult.

2. He was a child prodigy

Even though David Meece suffered greatly as a child, it is noteworthy that he was also a child prodigy. In fact, he discovered he has a talent for playing piano at a very young age and became amazingly good at it.

He used the playing of the piano and keyboard as a means to escape from what was going on in his home and by the time he was a teenager, Meece was already touring Europe and USA making waves.

David was only 16 years old when he was the featured soloist with the Houston Symphony and under the direction of renowned conductor, Andre Previn, performing the difficult Khachaturian Piano concerto, 45 minutes in length.

3. He enjoyed a scholarship

David got a scholarship to study music at the Peabody Conservatory and while he was there he gave his life to Christ and decided to follow Jesus. It was also here that he met Debbie who later became his wife. She helped him draw closer to God and gave him strength and hope in times of distress.

4. His debut album

His debut was in 1976 when he released his first recording DAVID, which initiated his career and the journey he has taken as a Christian recording artist for the past three decades. As his music gained ground, Meece began to play to sold-out concerts all over the world while composing songs that have become Christian household standards.

5. His life’s dedication

Because of what he went through while growing up, David Meece dedicated his life to the ministry of Teen Challenge where he creates awareness and helps families deal with the effects of growing up in destructive homes and also helps those who are seeking help recover from addictions and become better people. To support and create awareness about Teen Challenge, he started doing annual benefit concerts in 1986.

In 1998, Teen Challenge of Arizona opened its arms to David Meece’s ministries and is providing the office facilities for David’s ministry headquarters. He has contributed to helping the ministries through writing songs for the Teen Challenge choir and also producing special musical projects as well as offering to speak officially on behalf of the powerful worldwide ministry.

6. The response to his life story

David Meece’s story and circumstances surrounding his childhood were shared in a two-day broadcast on focus on the family in 2003, it received such tremendous response that it was aired again later that year and listed as one of the top five broadcasts of the year.

7. What his wife does

David’s wife Debbie teaches strings and piano privately. She also performs with the Harpeth String Trio out of Nashville.

A multitalented woman, she has also written a powerful devotional to accompany her husband’s CD titled Once in a Lifetime.

8. A receptive audience

David Meece is blessed with a great and very receptive audience who will go anywhere to hear him sing. As a matter of fact, he has set a record for packing out auditoriums from Houston’s Jones Hall to the Sydney Opera House and filling stadiums in the USA and Canada.

9. His many awards

David Meece is also considered one of the most respected Christian Rock singers out there. In 2008 and 2011 he and Susie McEntire were inducted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. Also in 2009, he received the Visionary Award for the Inspirational Male Soloist division, and in November 2012, he was presented with the AMG Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award.

One of David’s songs’ We Are the Reason’ was recorded by well over 200 artists in several languages all over the world and was nominated for the Dove award song of the year.

10. The death of his father

In 1986, at the height of his career, David’s father passed away and this brought deep unresolved hurts and emotional pains that have been tucked away to the surface. He was in the middle of a 70 City Tour titled ‘Seventy Times Seven’ when he received a phone call from his brother telling him of his father’s death and while singing about forgiveness in one of his concerts, David fought desperately to forgive his Dad and he eventually did.
