Jesse Powell was born on September 12, 1971, in Gary, Indiana, United States, although his family later relocated to Philadelphia in 1983. He was raised alongside 3 siblings Trina, Tamara, and Jacob. His sisters would later become an American contemporary R&B group, which would be popular in the late 1990s.

Jesse and his family began performing at local talent shows. The singer then moved to Los Angeles in 1990 to pursue a career in music. His sisters Trina and Tamara tagged along and also established themselves as vocalists.

In 1993, he was discovered by Carl Roland in Kansas, after he heard him sing at an artist showcase. Shortly after, he was signed by Louis Silas Jr. of the Silas Records imprint.

He became famous for his song, “You” which peaked at number 2 in R&B and number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song became an anthem on the lips of young men trying to profess their love to their lovers.

He released 4 albums and 11 singles in the duration of his career. Some of his songs include All I Need (1996), Gloria (1996), I Wasn’t With It (1998), ‘Bout It, ‘Bout It (1999), Something in the Past (2001), and By the Way (2003) among others.

The American Singer was not married at the time of his death. In fact, he has never been married, and information about all his relationships was always kept private.

There were rumors that the late singer might have been gay, which was why all his relationships were private. However, at the time of his death, Jesse had not addressed these rumors.
