Odee Perry was an American rapper and a gang member who was killed in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Chicago. Before he was gruesomely killed, he was a member of a gang called Black Disciples.
Following his death, the neighborhood where he grew up was renamed after him. Also, quite and a number of his friends and family came out to mourn him both online and offline. He was loved and respected among his gang members so they took a new name, “O’Block”, in his honor.
Odee Perry’s Early Life and Background
Odee Perry was born on May 13th, 1991 in the United States of America. During his formative years, Perry joined one of the notorious gangs, Black Disciples.
He was also linked to other established rappers such as Keith Cozart(Chief Keef). Perry has appeared in a couple of Keef’s music videos.

The Truth about the Murder of Odee Perry
On August 11, 2011, Odee Perry was shot dead outside Parkway Garden. He was shot severally on his body and neck at around 11 pm on 64 King Drive.
According to reports, Odee became a target following the death of a rival gang member, Tooka. Police sources claimed he was killed by a 17-year-old female gang assassin named Gakirah Barnes. Barnes also known as K.I claimed she killed 17 people in an online post.
It has been speculated that Barnes might have killed Odee as revenge for allegedly killing her friend and fellow gang member, Shondale Tooko Gregory who was killed on August 11, 2011.
Odee Perry’s alleged killer, Barnes was later killed by a hooded gunman in her neighborhood. Reports revealed that she had revealed her location in real time through her Twitter account. This is yet another account of someone being killed through social media location.
She died in a shooting where 5 people were killed and 36 people were injured during a rap battle going on.

His Neighbourhood was Renamed after Him
After he was killed, his friends as well as gang members decided to rename the community after him. The Parkway Gardens, Apartment Homes was renamed O’Block in his honor.
For a place that is notorious for gang wars and notoriety, it earns its description of being the most dangerous and deadliest neighborhood in the United States.
Interestingly, the block has a bright spot having a famous person, Michelle Obama the wife of the former American president, Barack Obama.
Other famous persons that have lived there include the rappers, Chief Keef and King Von. When the Oblock was put up for sale, Chief Keef showed interest in buying it but Lil Durk showed more commitment.
The gang wars have gone beyond silencing rivals to a fight for areas. Oblock is named after Odee Perry while Toooka also inspired the Tookaville, a name that the St. Lawrence Boys gang uses now.
Even after the American rapper died, the rivalry between his gang and other gangs did not end. His murder is certainly one among many that have happened in O’Block, a community that is now considered one of the deadliest neighborhoods in the United States.
There are reports that when the O’Block was put up for sale, Keef showed interest in buying it alongside rapper Lil Durk.
In the late 2000s, the neighborhood was known as the center of a gang shooting mostly among teenagers and young adults between the age of 20-25. These people are usually members of either Gangster Disciplines or Black Disciplines, the two main gangs that both control territory near the block.
Nevertheless, the violence in the community has reportedly declined since 2013.
The truth about what happened to Odee Perry still remains a mystery however, it is sad that a talented person was yet again killed through gun violence. While the authorities claim the rate of gun violence has drastically declined, there are still a couple of gangs that do not make the streets safe for people. It was recently announced that the O’Block neighborhood has been officially sold and the residents would have to start relocating in January 2013 after which the place would be demolished.
