Keith LeBlanc was born in Bristol, Connecticut in 1954 and grew up there. There isn’t much information available about his family and early childhood. But it is on record that he had very supportive parents who encouraged his dreams of becoming a professional musician.

He Had an Early Addiction to the Drums

LeBlanc played in several bands as a teenager, drawing inspiration from Ringo Starr of the Beatles. His parents got him a practice pad and he joined the school orchestra, demonstrating an early enthusiasm and focus. His early interest was horned by a drummer at school, who pushed him to put together a makeshift kit and use his father’s HiFi system to play recordings. When he was fourteen, his older bandmates got him into the bar where he gave his debut performance.

Keith Went Pro With Sugar Hill

Keith went to Doug Wimbish and McDonald’s audition in the late 1970s when his friend, Harold Sargent was quitting his position in Sugar Hill’s house band. His audition was successful and got a career start recording with hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel. He also played on songs by Kool Moe Dee & the Treacherous 3, the Crash Crew, the Funky 4+ 1, and others. He stayed with the label until 1982. After that, he moved on to Tommy Boy Records.

He is further known for his work as a member of the On-U Sound. Also, Keith LeBlanc continued to experiment with new sounds via his own Blanc Records. His writing and production skills were utilized by artists like Living Colour, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Ministry, and Nine Inch Nails. As a drummer and producer, he worked with everyone from James Brown to Trevor Horn, Seal to R.E.M., The Rolling Stones, and lots more.

LeBlanc also worked with British producer Adrian Sherwood. Sherwood was best known for his dub music work, but he also mixed and produced records by Ministry and Depeche Mode. They quickly started working together, bringing in Wimbish and McDonald.

The four, who went by the name Tackhead, collaborated with other people and operated under a wide range of titles. They released the Strange Things album in 1990 but split shortly afterward. After splitting up in the early 1990s, the band came back together to tour in 2004 and 2022.

Later on, LeBlanc worked on solo projects and with McDonald’s blues-influenced band Little Axe.

He had a thriving solo career

Over the years, Keith put out six solo albums. In 2005, a compilation CD spanning his entire career was also issued. His landmark album Major Malfunction was of great influence to a whole generation of musicians. The album, a reaction to the 1986 disaster with the space shuttle Challenger, inspired a lot of musicians in the US industrial scene in particular.
