‘Erin Carter is someone who would risk everything for her family’. This is possibly the best answer to the question ‘Who is Erin Carter?’. That question also happens to be the title of the August 24, 2023-released miniseries on Netflix.
The 7-episode series tells the story of a woman who leaves England to start her life afresh in Barcelona. Things don’t always pan out as expected anyway, and despite trying to live low-key with a job as a school teacher, a robbery at her local supermarket ends up revealing who she truly is.
This goes on to expose a lot of things, puts her and her family in danger, and ends with the past calling back.
Given the way the 7th episode of this series ended, there are high hopes of a continuation. This supposed continuation paves the way for a rumored second season but when will it be released?
About Who is Erin Carter?
As already pointed out, this is a mystery drama series centered around the life of a substitute teacher in a school in Barcelona, Spain.
Erin Carter, the protagonist, is played by Swedish Actress of Kurdish ancestry, Evin Ahmad. She left a past in England which she ran away from. She had been in Spain for about 5 years before her past came haunting when an encounter with a robber in a local grocery store opened a can of worms.
The 7-episode limited miniseries takes viewers through the journey of Carter’s life with her daughter who is a preteen and attends the same school she teaches at. Her daughter is Harper played by the young actress Indica Watson.
Harper is portrayed as a sort of ‘chip off the block’ as she boldly stands up to bullies and doesn’t mind using her fists to defend herself. Just like her mum who isn’t afraid of taking on anyone and even showcases natural, professional fighting skills.
Erin Carter is also married to a man named Jordi (Sean Teale). Her daughter and husband who eventually gets in the mix of her past and all the trouble the unveiling of who she truly is, causes.
Another main character in the series is Officer Emilio who is a divorcee with a gambling problem. He is at the heart of the investigations which further unveils what Erin Carter ran from and who she really is.
The season is packed with action, fights, and even deaths. One could say that the tragedies were necessary for the plot development of the series, anyway.
It is important to note that this story is fictional and not based on a book.
Will there be a Second Season of Who is Erin Carter on Netflix?
The end of the 7th episode of Who is Erin Carter gives room for speculation that Netflix and the series director, Jack Lothian could be working on another season.
There are a lot of questions that need to be answered about how the first season came to an end.
For one, after clearing a truck-load of mess created during the entire 7 episodes, Erin Carter, Harper, and her husband, Jordi were captured enjoying some time out on the beach. Everything looked like it was going well and everyone was satisfied and peaceful.
However, the past came knocking once again and Erin met with DI Jim Armstrong who tells her that duty calls. Carter was to go back to her mysterious life as an undercover agent.
Being one who doesn’t back down or shy away from danger, Erin Carter accepts this proposition. She brings an end to the season by possibly answering the question posed by the title of the series – ‘Who is Erin Carter?’
Netflix together with Jack Lothian, Andy Harries, Rob Bullock, Sharon Hughff, and Naula O’Leary, the show’s producers, may be back to the boardroom talking about putting into consideration, a second season for this TV drama.
If and when they decide, viewers and fans of this show will be updated about the ‘when’ and more.
Keep in mind that the first season of Who is Erin Carter? was first announced in February 2022. It was announced that it would be an 8-part series named which would be named ‘Palomino’. However, it took a year and 6 months before the series was released.
If viewers are to go by this, it may take another 18 months to get the second season released. It could be more, and it could take less time, however, once an announcement from Netflix is made, all speculations will be put to rest.
Reviews and Critical Response
One of the beauties of the 7-part series is the fact that its binge-worthiness is very high. One can finish all episodes in a few evenings or for extremists, in a long night. The season’s episodes are between 44 minutes to 54 minutes long.
Despite all these, there haven’t really been a lot of not-so-bad reviews about the series. Safe for that of The Guardian’s journalist, Lucy Mangan who believes the series is a bunch of cliches, isn’t a convincing watch, and lacks suspense.
The reviewer and critic also pointed out some parts of the series that were predictable without enough depth.
