Family is an important part of life or at least that’s what is generally believed. At the center of one such family relationship, 15-year-old Tammy Homolka found herself helpless when her older sister, Karla Homolka, and her partner, Paul Bernardo killed her on Christmas Eve, 1990.
Before killing her, they drugged her and raped her while Paul recorded. While Karla later tried to help clear her sisters throat by turning her upside down, it was a futile effort. Eventually, Tammy choked on her vomit.
At the time, they made Tammy’s death look like an accident but this was the beginning of Karla and Paul’s killing spree which earned them the nickname Ken and Barbie Doll murderers.
Tammy Homolka was a Promising Child…
Born on January 1, 1975, to a Czeck father, Karel, and a Canadian mother, Dorthy Seger, Tammy Lyn Homolka was a child that every parent dreams of having.
She grew up with two sisters, Karla and Lori(Logan Valentini).
While in Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, Tammy found a flair for sports and was active in Track and Field events, soccer, and cross-country running.
…not Everyone Taught She Was
Despite her interest in sports, her sister did not share the same feeling. Karla worried that her partner, Paul found her little sister attractive and she started planning how to stop this attraction.
For context, Karla met 23-year-old Paul at a restaurant when she was 17 years old. The attraction between the two was quite intense and they ended up having s*x that same day. From that point, they became inseparable and would go on to get engaged.
Meanwhile, Paul also became attracted to her sister and started to emotionally blackmail Karla by calling her fat and ugly. This made her allow him to control her life starting from how she dressed, ate, or thought.
When he suggested she allow him to have s*x with her sister, she did not resist the idea considering she wanted to deal with the attraction he had for Tammy.
More on this, Paul was upset that Karla was not a virgin when they met and to handle the matter once and for all, Karla offered her sister for Paul to disvirgin.
With an IQ of 132 and her experience working in a veterinary clinic, Karla was able to get the drugs for sedating Tammy. They made the first attempt in July by putting valium in Tammy’s food but she woke up before Paul could rape her. Their second attempt was more successful in December.
Karla Gifted Tammy’s Virginity to Paul as a Christmas Gift
Considering that Christmas invokes thoughts of giving and sharing, Karla and Paul gave it a new meaning. Karla used the opportunity to gift her sister’s virginity to Paul.
On the ill-fated day, Karla and Paul sedated Tammy with Halcion which she stole from her place of work on December 23 after a dinner at the Homolka’s home. While their parents and sister Lori were sleeping upstairs, they set their plan in motion.
Paul raped Tammy while recording everything on tape. One would think Karla was absent but it turns out she was present and holding the anesthetic-soaked rag to Tammy’s nose and mouth.
Sadly for Tammy, she started vomiting and stopped breathing. Karla decided to use her experience working in a veterinary Clinic to clear Tammy’s throat. She tried to turn her upside down but Tammy choked on her vomit.
Tammy’s Killers Concealed Her Death
When they realized that Tammy could not be revived, Karla and Paul dressed Tammy and took her to her room. They proceeded to call 911.
Official reports state her cause of death to be an accidental one as a result of choking on her vomit.
How Tammy’s Death Marked the Beginning of the Ken and Barbie Murderers Killing Spree
Tammy Homolka’s sad death remains a sad one, yet, it is not the only one involving her older sister and her partner, Paul. Their ability to kill and conceal the crime boldened the pair into more heinous killings.
The name Ken and Barbie murderers is a name that describes the good-looking pair. Between 1990 and 1992, they went on a rampage so brutal that they raped at least 14 and killed 3 school girls.
They are known for making videos of their crime which the and killed a description of the killing spree started by the two and it lasted between 1990 and 1992.

What Happened to Tammy Homolka’s Murderers?
Paul dubbed Ken and Karla dubbed Barbie served time for the crimes they committed. Karla was released unconditionally in 2004 after serving 12 years while Paul is still in prison.
As mentioned earlier, Paul and Karla made their first victim’s death look like an accident. However, they were later apprehended for other crimes
So why is Karla a free woman? This is a simple question because she turned against Paul and signed a controversial plea bargain also referred to as deal with the devil.
During the publicized case, many were shocked by the bargain. She claimed to have been an unwilling accomplice. But the tapes made would later show that she was an active participant.
Per the bargain, Karla was only convicted of manslaughter in the rapes, torture, and murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French.
Based on her profile on Wikipedia, she graduated from Queens University with a Psychology. She is also a mother of three and has been married to Thierry Bordelais since 2005.
Apparently, she lives a normal life if her volunteering at the Greaves Adventist Academy in Montreal is anything to go by.
