Sheila Annette Lewis, in January 2023, filed a case against Alberta Health Service, doctors, and a hospital for being denied a lifesaving organ transplant. The reason for her denial was that she refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
Lewis was, until her death on August 24, 2023, a resident of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. She was diagnosed with a terminal disease in 2018. Following the diagnosis, the then 53-year-old woman required an organ transplant for survival.
It took 2 years for her to be put on a wait-list to get the organ and when it seemed like she would finally get it over with, she was taken off the list for refusing to take the Covid-19 vaccination.
The case which has been at the Supreme Court of Canada, was dismissed in June 2023. The result of these all eventually led to her demise despite getting an American hospital willing to grant her the transplant.
She died at the age of 58 and accusing fingers have been pointing to health service providers and the government.
Sheila Annette Lewis is an Alberta Resident Diagnosed with a Terminal Illness since 2018
Sheila Annette Lewis was a Northern Alberta resident who was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2018. She needed an organ transplant as soon as possible and after all necessary tests were done, she was placed at the top of the organ wait list in May 2020.
By October of the same year, she was placed at the top of the list due to the severity of her condition. However, problems started in May 2021 when she was told that she would need to get the COVID-19 vaccination before the transplant would happen.
Ms. Lewis refused this condition and for that reason, she was moved to the bottom of the wait list. This happened in November and since then, the Alberta woman has been fighting legal battles against the 6 doctors who took her down the list, the Alberta hospital, and even the Alberta Health Service.
Sheila Sued the Alberta Health Service, 6 Doctors, and a Hospital
Sheila Annette Lewis sued Alberta Hospital, 6 transplant physicians, and the Alberta Health Service in 2022 following their decision to take her name off the top of the priority list for an organ transplant.
First, the case was taken to the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench then the Alberta Court of Appeal in 2022. Both courts, after hearing appeals from both Shiela and the healthcare providers, reached the same verdict.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Alberta Bill of Rights actually had nothing concerning the case and so could not make a decision for or against Shiela.
By January 2023, she took the case to the higher court, the Supreme Court of Canada. The entire case was placed under a publication ban so the hospital, doctors, and even the organ that needs the transplant have been kept secret.
According to Ms. Lewis, she did not want to go against her conscience by taking the Covid-19 vaccine the doctors insisted on. She revealed that 2 physicians told her that getting the vaccine would be detrimental to her health and that she may not make it out alive.
Annette Lewis also claimed to have run a test at Kinexus Bioinformatics Corporation which certified that she had high levels of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.
The test results also proved that Shiela had recovered from COVID-19 twice in the past and was in good condition.
As such, Sheila Annette Lewis believed that she didn’t need to take any vaccines and should be placed back at the top of the priority list for organ transplants.
However, the doctors still insisted that she needed a boost from the vaccination before the transplant could be done and failure to accept the vaccine would mean she still couldn’t undergo the transplant.
Lewis’ counsel, Allison Pejovic stated that a refusal to grant her client the transplant following the revelations was indefensible and a disgrace.
However, in June 2023, the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear the case presented to them in January of that year. The case was dismissed without even granting the parties an audience.

On June 10, 2023, Sheila Annette Lewis found an American hospital willing to grant her the transplant she required to save her life. They were willing to carry this out without her taking the vaccine.
However, being a Canadian citizen, it was going to cost a lot and she needed so much funds to successfully get it through.
Sake of that, a crowdfunding program was set up on her behalf to help raise money for the transplant, tests, and other expenses that would arise.
According to a July 18, 2023 publication, Sheila Annette Lewis’ GiveSendGo fundraising had managed to raise $122,195 of the stipulated $600,000.
They were still soliciting more funds before the announcement of the beneficiary’s demise.
At 6:37 p.m. on August 24, 2023, Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson announced Sheila’s death. Laura is a former 700 Club Canada co-host and a political advocate against societal ills.
Thompson made this announcement on her verified X account and prayed that all who harmed her would reap their reward.
The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom (JCCF) which has been on the case and even got Ms. Sheila her lawyer also made a statement. Upon the death announcement, the center tweeted that ‘Justice delayed is often Justice denied’.
They also stated that the decision by the Alberta doctors to take the woman off the transplant list may have caused her death.
Sheila Annette Lewis died at the age of 58 after struggling with the life-threatening disease since her diagnosis in 2018.
