Shakur Stevenson is an American Professional Boxer who is famous for being undefeated since he turned pro in 2017. He began his career as a child and mentored by his grandfather, he turned pro at 20 after having an impressive amateur career.

The Boxer won a silver medal for the United States of America in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil. He welcomed a daughter, Leilani, with his fiancee, rapper, Young Lyric, in December 2021.

1. The Undefeated Boxer was Raised by his Step-father

Shakur Stevenson was born on July  28, 1997, in Newark, New Jersey. He was raised by his mother Malikah Stevenson and his stepfather, Shahid Guyton after his father left their lives. Although there is no information about his father, it is known that he is of Puerto Rican descent. He is the oldest of 9 children which include 2 girls.

2. Shakur Stevenson was Introduced to Boxing at a Young Age

Stevenson’s mother worked a lot while he was growing up. This caused him to spend a lot of time with his grandfather, Wali Moses, who loved watching boxing fights on TV. Shakur fell in love with the sport and at the age of 2, he was already throwing punches in the air.

A few months later, his grandfather did a little experiment where he placed a baseball bat and boxing gloves at different angles in the living room, and Stevenson moved towards the gloves. At age 5, he was always shadowboxing wherever he went.

3. He began his Boxing Career by Fighting in Amateur Ranks

When it became clear that Shakur wanted to be a boxer, his entire community including his grandfather, started ensuring he was disciplined and never went out of line. He rose through amateur ranks with his grandfather’s help as his coach.

This led him to participate in tournaments in and outside the US, as his grandfather was always on the lookout for opportunities for Shakur to fight.

He made his abroad debut at the age of 14 when he fought and won the Veles Cup in Russia. Subsequently, he moved to Virginia to train with Koroma at 16. Shakur won the AIBA Youth World Championships and the Summer Youth Olympics in 2014.

4. Shakur Stevenson Won a Silver Medal at the Rio Olympics

The boxer went to the US Olympic Trials in 2015, where he qualified to join the US boxing team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

Sadly, he lost his fight to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez after a split decision and won a silver medal. Shakur was very emotional about not winning the gold medal for his country.

5. The Boxer Started a GoFundMe to Help Raise Funds for His Family to Travel for the 2016 Olympics

The featherweight champion created a GoFundMe account to help raise funds to enable his family to travel with him to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The money raised would help pay for their flight and accommodation. He also wanted them to be there to encourage him and cheer him on while he wins a gold medal for their country.

The GoFundMe was able to raise about  $10,000, and his family was able to travel with him to Rio. Subsequently, they were there to console him when he lost his fight.

6. Shakur Stevenson Turned Professional at 20

In 2017, after losing at the Olympics, Shakur turned pro. During the Olympics, retired boxing heavyweight and promoter, Floyd Mayweather, was in Brazil and was hoping to recruit him to join his promotion, Mayweather Promotions. However, the young boxer joined Top Rank instead.

7. The Boxer was Arrested in July 2018 

Shakur was arrested alongside fellow boxer David Grayton, on July 1st, 2018, after an altercation in a parking garage in Miami, Florida. This happened a few hours after Shakur’s 21st birthday party on South Beach.

The boxers were said to have made inappropriate comments to a group of people in the garage, which included two women. Their comment offended the women and soon after, punches were flying across the garage.

This led to one-year probation and 50 hours of community service.

8. The 27-year-old is a Father

Shakur and his girlfriend, Young Lyric, an American rapper, welcomed their daughter, Leilani Asha Stevenson, on December 6, 2021. Although it is not clear when the couple met and how they did, they seem happy in their relationship and are always ready to flaunt each other on their individual social media platforms.

Shakur proposed to his girlfriend and baby mama on May 1, 2022, after he won the fight with Oscar Valdez.

9. The Boxer is not Related to Legendary Rapper, Tupac

Shakur is not a new name in the entertainment industry. It is the name of one of the greatest rappers of all time, Tupac Amaru Shakur.

This has led a lot of people to believe that the boxer is related to the late rapper. Shakur is not related to the famous rapper, however, he was named after him. The boxer was born 9 months after the rapper died from bullet wounds. He was given the name with the hope that he would grow into a strong, proud, and respectable man, just like the late rapper.

10. The Boxer has an Estimated Net Worth of $ 1 million

Having made a name for himself in the boxing industry, Shakur’s net worth is estimated at $1 million. However, his net worth is expected to increase as his career grows.

The boxer has channeled his resources into taking care of his family and ensuring they live a comfortable life as a way of appreciating them for being there for him.

The American boxer is famous for being an undefeated featherweight boxing champion. However, he has to keep defending his title from other boxers. The question on the lips of many is “how long will he remain undefeated?”.
