Ruschell Boone was busy with work and doing great but all that changed in June 2022 when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, after experiencing abdominal pain and weight loss. She underwent a series of chemotherapy treatments to try and shrink the tumor and stop its spread.

Boone took a medical leave from work to focus on her health and recovery. She shared her journey with her colleagues, friends, and followers on social media, asking for prayers and support.

In March 2023, she returned to work, resuming her role as a noon anchor at NY1. She said she was feeling better and stronger and was eager to get back to work. She also said she was optimistic about her prognosis and hoped to beat the disease.

The Jamaican-American reporter continued to work until July 2023, when she announced that her cancer had worsened. She said that her cancer had metastasized in her liver, meaning that it had spread from the pancreas to another organ. She mentioned further that she was back in treatment and that the chemotherapy was working, but she also asked for more prayers and encouragement.

She died on September 3, 2023, at the age of 48, surrounded by her loved ones.

On social media, a lot of her coworkers, friends, and fans shared their sorrow and condolences as they remembered her as a respected, honored, and inspiring journalist who changed many lives with her stories and personality. Mayor Eric Adams, City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, City Councilman Robert Holden, NY1, and many others have said so many incredible things about her.
