Robert Blake was arrested alongside his longtime bodyguard, Earle Caldwell, on April 18, 2002. While Rob was charged with the murder of his wife, Earle was charged with conspiracy in connection with the murder.
He was arrested after a retired stuntman, Ronald “Duffy” Hambleton alleged that Rob tried to hire him to kill Bonny, and was willing to testify against him. Similarly, another associate of Hambleton, Gary McLarty, had a similar story to share.
On April 22, 2002, the American actor was charged with one count of murder with special circumstances, an offense that could lead to a death penalty. He was also charged with 2 counts of solicitation of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder.

In October 2003, during a pre-trial hearing, the judge dismissed the conspiracy charges stating that they had no forensic evidence against Blake tied him to the alleged murder weapon.
The trial for Bakley’s murder commenced on December 20, 2004. The prosecutors purported that Blake had Bakley murdered to free himself from a loveless marriage. However, on March 16, 2005, Blake was found not guilty of all charges leveled against him.
