The Midsomer Murders series has been airing since 1997 on ITV. The British television series is based on a book series of the English novelist, Caroline Graham, Chief Inspector Barnaby.
The series is loved for its intriguing storyline, soundtracks, and fine casts. Considering the complexity of the detective drama, keeping up with the characters thereof hasn’t been the easiest thing to do for some fans of the show.

1. Neil Dudgeon
Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby
Neil joined the Midsomer Murders cast in 2010. The following year, he replaced John Nettles as the lead character John Barnaby, a role he had been playing since the show began. Neil has featured in several movies and series including Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, A Touch of Frost, Casualty, and Inspector Morse.
His character, John Barnaby is a police detective who investigates murders in Midsomer County. He tries to balance this demanding work with his domestic life.
2. Fiona Dolman
Sarah Barnaby
Fiona is a Scottish actress known for her roles in The Royal Today, in which she plays Pamela Andrews, as well as the movie Heartbeat.
Her character, Sarah Barnaby is the wife of the detective chief inspector, John. She has been married to him for over 15 years, and they have a child together, a daughter named Betty. They also have a dog named Sykes. When she is not busy dealing with the demands of her husband’s job, she is writing a book and teaching her students.

3. James Fleet
Michael Falconer
James Fleet is a British actor well known for starring in Four Weddings and a Funeral, where he plays an incompetent man called Tom. He has also appeared in The Vicar of Dibley as Hugo Horton, Outlander as the Reverend Wakefield, and Patrick Melrose, in which he plays Sir Victor Elsen.
He joined the Midsomer Murders Cast to play Michael Falconer, a musical genius who makes great compositions. He wants to debut his Ninth Symphony at the Thassingham Festival, at the risk of losing his life due to the “curse of the ninth” like composers who have come before him. He is egotistical, selfish, and a bit of a bully, which hasn’t made him very well-liked.
4. Nick Hendrix
Detective Sergeant Jamie Winter
Nick is a popular face around the London stage, appearing in productions at the National Theatre as well in West End. He has starred in television series and films including Call the Midwife, Black Mirror, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Legend. He was introduced to the Midsomer Murders family in 2016.
His character, Jamie Winter is John Barnaby’s, right-hand man. He’s a very eager detective with a good head on his shoulders. His priority is to do his job as best as he can so everyone remembers him, and that requires paying attention to even the tiniest detail. He’s also very humorous, which a great gift in his line of work.
5. Manjinder Virk
Dr. Kam Karrimore
Manjinder is known for her appearances in several movies and television series including Skins, Doctors, Ordinary Lies, The Bill, Hunted, Munroe, and Holy City. She has also written and directed a number of award-winning short films such as Forgive and Out of Darkness.
She joined the Midsomer Murders cast to play Kate Wilding, the resident pathologist in the police department. However, she just got a new job all the way up in Montreal and might be leaving. She and Sergeant Winter have the hots for each other.
6. Flora Spenser-Longhurst
Natalie Wheeler
Flora is popularly known for starring in the television show The Bastard Executioner, Leonardo, and Unforgiven in which she played Emily Belcombe.
Her character, Natalie is a violinist with the orchestra who has to deal with her brother’s passing, after he was murdered.
7. Simon Callow
Vernon De Warthog
Simon has had a long and distinguished career on television, amassing several credits along the way in series such as Outlander, Doctor Who, Victoria & Abdul, and The Rebel. He has also enjoyed an accomplished career on stage.
He joined the Midsomer Murders cast to play Vernon De Warthog, a viola player in the orchestra who is always at loggerheads with the genius himself, Michael Falconer. He is Audrey Glenhill’s lover in the series and is considered a blabbermouth by many.
8. Robert Daws
Hamish Rafferty
Robert is the actor who portrays Shank in the popular British comedy show The Sick Note. He also plays Dr Choke in season one of Poldark, and Tippy Gossip in the series Jeeves and Wooster.
His character, Hamish Rafferty is the husband to Jane Rafferty and the co-owner of the Rafferty Distillery, the biggest brewery in the county.
9. Joseph Prowen
Dan Falconer
Joseph is an actor whose career is just taking off. Although he doesn’t have hundreds of movie credits to his name, he has managed to leave a mark on his appearances including And Then There Were None, Casualty, and Decline and Fall. Much like his personality in Midsomer Murders, he is a talented musician and incredibly skilled on the violin and banjo.

His character, Dan Falconer is the don of the musical maestro Michael, so he has really big shoes to fill. Despite his best efforts, he is unable to make his father proud of him or offer even the slightest hint of admiration. Still, he is struggling to make a first choice violin in the orchestra.
10. Caroline Langrishe
Janey Rafferty
Caroline is a regular Dade in television, appearing in series like The Case, Casualty, Death in Paradise, Judge John Deed, Doctors, and Hollyoaks. She has been with Midsomer Murders since 2010.
Her character, Janet is the beloved life and business partner of Hamish. She is one of the festival organizers and Candice, her daughter is part of the orchestra where she plays the violin.
