When Tommy Bolin died in 1976, many believed what was the brightest star of Colorado at the time had died. He was a great guitarist and songwriter who maintained an excellent solo career while also collaborating with other great stars including Zephyr, James Gang, and Billy Cobham. He was briefly a member of Deep Purple.
Many years after his death, Bolin has still remained significant to the music scene in the United States and was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame. While there are many things that are quite known about him, here are things you probably don’t know yet.
Tommy Bolin- His Life
It was as Thomas Richard Bolin that the singer was born on August 1, 1951, in Sioux City, Iowa, the United States to Richard and Barbara. Bolin was raised alongside two brothers, Johnnie and Rick. He also had another brother, Bobby, who unfortunately did not survive after birth.
Like most other famous music stars, Tommy maintained an interest in music since he was a young child and was influenced by people such as Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.
He was still a child when he first appeared on TV in the full costume of Elvis. His performance on the local TV program, Kids Corner was interesting enough to have him back after 3 days after viewers fell in love with him and wanted more of the youngster.
By the time he was 15, he had already been with different bands such as The Velairs, Denny & The Triumphs, and Patch Of Blue. However, he felt he was not moving forward and was tired of that so he decided he was leaving home for Colorado, a move that was supported by his parents.
It was after the move that he joined the band Ethereal Zephyr as its lead guitarist. He would go on in 1972 to form the band Energy which did not release an album in his lifetime because there was no available contract. After joining other bands, he later decided to have a solo career.
In 1975, Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Blue and in his place, Tommy was brought in. Unfortunately, he was not going to remain a member for a long time.
How Did Bolin Die?
On December 4, 1976, the world woke up to the shocking announcement that Tommy was dead at the age of 25. His death was said to be as a result of heroin overdose, something that was not seen as suicide.
Just some hours before his unfortunate death, the Hall of Famer was told by The Miami News Jon Marlowe to take care of himself. To that, he replied that he had always taken care of himself and he was going to live long so Jon should not worry about him.
In addition to Heroin, other things he overdosed on that led to his death included alcohol and cocaine.
He is buried in Sioux City, Iowa in Calvary Cemetery.

Things You Didn’t Know About Tommy Bolin
1. He decided on a career in music after seeing Elvis perform
Even though his love for music was something that was always a part of him, Tommy decided that he was going to have a career in music after he was taken by his parents to the Sioux City Municipal Auditorium where he saw Presley perform. This was a moment, in 1956, he would never forget as it blew his mind away and music was all he wanted to do.
2. Addiction
With all the good looks and talent on his side, Tommy was set to take the world as far as music was concerned. Unfortunately, he had a serious addiction to drugs. His love affair with drugs took the better side of him so much that it was affecting every side of him until it finally led to his death.
During his addiction, he would need as much as 20 aspirins each morning before he could get going. Once he failed to take it, his mornings were miserable.
3. Tommy was always thrown out of school
One of the trademarks of Tommy was his long hair. He kept this hair since his early days and because of that, he was almost always thrown out of school. At a point, his mother was already tired of this that she didn’t mind when he told her he was moving to Denver.
4. Bolin took music lessons
The school Tommy attended did not offer full-time music lessons, which happened to be something he was very interested in. Because of this, he got private music teachers to put him through. The first was Mr. Flood at Flood Music and then he moved to Mrs. Sullivan after he realized the former would not teach him how to become like Elvis.
A better part of his music lesson learned on the streets where he hung out with other young musicians.
5. Colorado Music Hall of Fame Induction
40 years after his death, Tommy Bolin got inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame in 2019 in recognition of his contribution to his arts.
6. Was he married?
Having died pretty young at only 25, Tommy was not married. However, he dated his girlfriend, Karen Ulibarri for a long time before he finally broke up with her. She would later date Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple whom she got married to.
Just as he was not married, so also he did not have his own children.
