Jesse Malin,57, became paralyzed from his waist downward on May 4, 2023, about 4 months after he turned 56. He revealed the health challenge in June 2023 and has been receiving treatment and learning how to move his body without using his legs. In another aspect of his life, Malin is not married but may have women around him who support him in different ways.
The Truth About Jesse Malin’s Sickness and What Happened to Him
Everything was seemingly normal with Malin until Thursday, May 4, 2023. On the day, the former Heart Attack band member was at a dinner in the East Village in celebration of the one-year memorial of the singer, Howie Pyro. Then, he felt a burning pain in his lower back.
It then traveled to his hips, thighs, and other parts of his lower body. It didn’t take much time before he collapsed on the floor of the restaurant.
Jimmy G, Murphy’s Law singer was there to help out until an ambulance arrived and he was taken to Mount Sinia Hospital. It was then confirmed that he suffered a rare spinal stroke.
It left him paralyzed from the waist down. According to him, doctors did not fully understand his condition and are not also sure about the chances of his walking again.
Malin described his feelings as:
The reports from the doctors have been tough, and there’s moments in the day where you want to cry, and where you’re scared. But I keep saying to myself that I can make this happen. I can recover my body.
At the time of this report, he is undergoing treatment which includes three rounds of physical therapy and rehabilitation. Moreso, he is learning how he could move his body without using his legs.
Malin is only one of the numerous famous people who have had to deal with paralysis. In fact, some of them such as Roger E. Mosley, and Blade Icewood. Others who have had paralysis are Robert Wyatt, Christopher Reeve, Darryl “Chill” Mitchell, and Teddy Pendergrass.
As of this report, there is no certainty as to what caused Malin’s condition. However, some of the causes of paralysis are:
- Strokes and spinal cord injuries
- Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Guillain-Barré syndrome
- Brain injuries like cerebral palsy
- Neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Apart From The Paralysis, He Suffered a Major Heartache
Malin has suffered heartache in his life and it is related to his mother. He was still a teenager when she, a frustrated singer died as a result of breast cancer.
She was only 43 at the time and probably had a lot of life ahead of her. Then, Malin featured Springsteen in Broken Radio which was a tribute song to her.
That was not his only woe. His family was broke and his parents were separated when he was only 8 years old. The good thing is that the Queens, New York-born singer has been able to move past the troubles and made it to become a highly acclaimed rock musician, guitarist, and songwriter.
Regardless of all that has been stated here with respect to the challenges he faced, these may be Malin’s most daring moment as far as his health is concerned. At least, it is this one time that he has no certainty of walking but we hope that he walks again.
He is expected to be discharged in late June and so far, there are contributions made to help his medical needs.
