Jatavia Johnson, popularly known by her music name, JT, is one of the upcoming female musicians in America and the other half of the music group known as City Girls.
The explicit musician is not always far from controversy or having a run-in with the law and may very well be one of the most controversial musicians in the future. She has been to jail for credit card fraud and even while behind bars she was alleged to have gotten pregnant and attempted to cover it up. She and Yung Miami once threw open a $ 25,000 twerk challenge to promote the song collaboration with Cardi B titled Twerk. Let’s get to know more about this talented but controversial musician in this piece.
Jatavia Shakara Johnson Biography
Jatavia Shakara Johnson was born in Opa Locka, Florida in the United States of America on December 3, 1992. She grew up with 2 younger siblings and was from a very humble background. She grew up in a very rough neighborhood and the environment does rub off on the individual. She was reported to have spent most of her childhood growing up in both Liberty city and Carol city in Florida.
Word has it that she never intended to become a musician in life but all that changed when she met her friend, Caresha Brownlee, also known as Yung Miami. The duo as teenagers began performing at block parties, nightclubs, and Strip clubs. It is also known that they made and recorded their hit single F*CK that N*gga” in her father’s makeshift home studio.
She Has A Criminal Past/Record
Sometimes, circumstances and situations (though not an excuse) can force an individual to go against the law, and this must have been her situation in 2017 when she was arrested and convicted of aggravated identity theft on fraudulent credit card charges. After her conviction, she was sentenced to 2 years in a Federal Prison, with the judge pushing back her surrender date.
She finally turned herself into the authorities on June 29, 2018, to begin her sentence and was incarcerated at FCI Tallahassee in July 2018. About halfway through serving her sentence, she was transferred to a halfway house in Atlanta – giving her the opportunity to work and visit family and friends while still serving her sentence.
She was eventually released from jail on March 7, 2020 (about 2 weeks before her initial release date). She marked her release from incarceration by releasing a single titled JT First Day Out to Mark her release.

Jatavia is not known to be a shy person as she has taken to live Instagram feeds to spit out whatever is on her mind at any particular time, without taking prisoners. Here are 5 facts about her which you may not presently know and which are very important about her:
1. She Had An Unfaithful Boyfriend
After she got out of jail, she and a few friends had an Instagram Live session where she didn’t shy away from revealing personal information about her relationship. A friend of hers, Tommie Lee (from Love & Hip Hop) told her that her boyfriend, Lil’ Yatchy (real name, Miles Oarks McCullum) “Held her Down” while she was incarcerated but Jatavia disagreed completely, stating for the records that her “boo” infant never contacted her while she was in jail – he sent no letters or email and neither visited her; rather she learned that he actually took another girl to his grandma’s funeral.
She then called him out Live to come to defend himself. Lil’ Yatchy then briefly joined her IG Live session (but off-camera) and wished the soul of his departed grandma will rest in peace and that the girl he took to her funeral was just a business associate, before going off-air.
2. She Worked With Yung Miami
Her musical partner, Yung Miami “held her down” and fully represented their musical interests while she was locked up. At a time it could have been very convenient for Yung Miami to dump her and move on with her music career, she chose not to but rather remained loyal to their friendship and music group, City Girls.
She continued to perform in the group’s name – even making an appearance at the Essence Festival in New Orleans sometime in 2019. She would also go to nightclubs and rip the DJ to play her group’s songs, and this helped their music to gain more popularity and enjoy more airplay.
3. Her Incarceration Inspired The Free JT Campaign
When she was in jail a few of her celebrity friends showed solidarity and expressed their desire for her to be freed. Her friend, Trina wore a T-shirt with the words “Free JT” boldly written on it to show her support. Famous musician, Drake also posted “Free my Shorty” on his Instagram handle to show his support.
