Her older brother, Samora Pinderhughes was also into music. Samora was a pianist and while Elena got drawn to the flute at a concert she attended at a very young age.

She led her band to the 59th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival for the first time ever, although she had played on the platform several times in the past as a soloist and with other artists/bands.
