Doyle Brunson, a well-known American poker legend, died on Sunday, May 14, 2023, in Las Vegas, at the age of 89. Doyle Brunson was born to John and Mealia Brunson on August 10, 1933, in Longworth, Fisher County, Texas. He was so passionate about basketball as a kid that he made the All-State Texas basketball team.
When he was playing for Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, he had a knee injury that ended his basketball career. Following that, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in administrative education in 1954 and 1955, respectively.
Brunson later worked as a school principal and a salesman before retiring to play poker. He began playing illegally at first, but he changed his ways after being robbed, beaten, and having a gun drawn on him.
So he turned it into a career by becoming a regular at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 1970. He won the WSOP championship in 1976 and 1977, as well as 10 WSOP bracelets.
He was admitted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 1988 for his poker exploits, and he has written a number of books, including Doyle Bruson’s Super System: A Course in Power Poker (1979), My 50 Most Memorable Hands (2007), and The Godfather of Poker: The Doyle Brunson Story (2009).
Brunson retired from playing poker a few months before his 85th birthday in June 2018.

His cause of death is unknown as of the time of writing. In addition, the late poker legend previously underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor from his neck.
Since the announcement of his death, fans and poker players have sent their condolences to the family, including, Daniel Negreanu, Scotty Nguyen, and James Woods.
