She was born María del Carmen Campuzano on December 7, 1970, to Rafael Campuzano Vélez and Magdalena Fruhbaüer Villegas. She grew up alongside three siblings namely Ruth Campuzano, Daniel Campuzano, and Jorge Campuzano.
Sadly, she lost two of these siblings within the period of ten years. Ruth passed on in 2010 due to a heart attack followed by the death of her brother, Jorge who also died of a heart attack.
2. She Launched her Career as a Model
Carmen started her career as a model at a young age. She rose to become a recognizable name in the industry with the appearance she made both on the catwalk and as a fashion model.
Notably, she appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine three times making her one of the only Mexican women to do so. She has also posed for store owners like Rafael Hernandez in Mexico City. 4. Her Career was Affected by Leptospirosis
In her rise to the top, Carmen was once regarded as one of the most beautiful women in Mexico, yet, this changed when she got infected with leptospirosis, a blood infection caused by bacteria. The effects of leptospirosis lead to kidney damage, meningitis, and other types of inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.
Regarding how she contracted such a bacteria, the actress alleged that she was poisoned by an ex-cook who poisoned her food with human feces.
Sadly for Carmen, the effects changed her appearance radically and this halted her career for some time.

As one of the beauty queens of the 90s, the loss of her beauty was a tragedy. This inspired movie makers to portray it in an episode of Mujer, Casos de la Vida Real, a Mexican anthology that was released in 2005. Carmen’s character was played by Frances Ondivela.
Apparently, Ondivela was chosen due to the similar features she shares with Carmen. Prior, Carmen was considered for the role but due to her relapses and struggles with ill health, the role was passed to Ondiviela with Carmen’s approval.
