Byun Hee Bong, born Byun In-chul gave the South Korean movie industry a show as an interesting actor before he died at 81 on 18 September 2023. He died of pancreatic cancer which was once declared cured.

The day he died, a funeral hall was preserved for him at Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. At the time of his death, his funeral was slated for 12:30 p.m. on September 20, 2023. Before his demise, Hee Bong was a TV and mainstream actor in roles in Eunuch (1986), Volcano High (2001), My Teacher, Mr. Kim (2003), Lovely Rivals (2004), The Ume Tree in the Midst of the Snow  (1984), and By Quantum Physics: A Nightlife Venture (2019).

How Did Byun Hee Bong Die?

The Okja actor suffered pancreatic cancer and died in the early morning of September 18, 2023. He was 81 at the time.

He had earlier been diagnosed with the ailment but was cleared. Unfortunately, he was later diagnosed again and it resulted in his demise.

While there is no revelation with respect to what may have caused the ailment in Byun In-Chul, it is revealed that some causes are smoking, diabetes, chronic pancreatitis or inflammation of the pancreas, family history, and certain genetic syndromes.

Other famous people to have died of pancreatic cancer in 2023 include Ruschell Boone and Manny Coto.

He Left a Legacy as an Actor 

Byun Hee Bong, born on 8 June 1942 left a mark as an actor with a career that began in the 1970s after he quit studying law at Chosun University in order to pursue a career in acting.

He made his acting debut in 1970 and continued with acting on TV. He later moved to mainstream acting in the 1980s and has since drawn attention from different parts of the world.

During his career, he won several awards such as:

  • MBC Drama Awards for Best Actor in a One-Act/Short Drama
  • KMDb Choiwos Awards for Best Supporting Actor
  • 4th Max Movie Awards for Best Supporting Actor
  • 9th Director’s Cut Awards  for Performer of the Year (ensemble cast)
  • 27th Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actor at the 51st Asia Pacific Film Festival (2006)
  • Best Actor in a One-Act Drama/Special for KBS Drama Awards (2004)
  • JoongAng Ilbo for Our Star Award (1986)
  • 21st Baeksang Arts Awards for Most Popular Actor (TV) (1985)
  • Hankook Ilbo for Popularity Award (1985)
  • MBC Drama Awards (1982)
