Brian Matusz, an American professional baseball pitcher, who was a former Baltimore Orioles pitcher, has passed away.
Matusz, an eight-year MLB veteran, died on 7 January 2025, at the age of 37 and his death was announced by the team. According to the statement by The Orioles, Brian Matusz died on Tuesday. However, the cause of his death was not revealed.
In a statement released on social media, the Orioles said: “A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-16, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate and always had a smile on his face.”
Brian Matusz, who was the No. 4 overall pick by the Orioles in the 2008 MLB Draft, made his MLB debut in 2009. The left-handed pitcher started his career as a starter before transitioning to a relief role.
In 2010, Matusz went on to achieve a career-high 10 wins, finishing the season with a 10-12 record and a 4.30 ERA across 32 starts. In 2015, he recorded a career-best 2.94 ERA over 58 relief appearances for the Orioles. The baseball pitcher also played for the Chicago Cubs, making a single start for the franchise in 2016.
Before his MLB career, Brian Matusz excelled at the University of San Diego, leading the NCAA with 141 strikeouts as a junior in 2008. He was also a two-time Golden Spikes finalist, a first-team All-American, and the WCC Pitcher of the Year.
The San Diego baseball head coach Brock Ungricht, has also mourned Matusz. In a news release, Ungricht said: “Brian was one of the best players to ever wear a Torero uniform. His dedication to the USD community and passion for the game of baseball were evident to all who knew him.”
Ungricht coinued: “Brian’s unexpected passing leaves a void in our hearts, but his legacy will continue to inspire us, both on and off the field. We will forever be grateful for his friendship and unwavering support of San Diego baseball. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
