It was on March 28, 1936, that Bill Gaither was born in Alexandria, Indiana, U.S. to the family of Lela Gaither and George W. Gaither. He was brought up alongside two siblings, Danny Gaither and Mary Ann Gaither Addison as the oldest of the three. He is currently the only member of his family still surviving.
Bill and all his siblings had an interest in music and this led them into forming the group popular as the Gaither Trio, The group sang in most churches in the Midwest and Indiana.
For his education, Bill went to Anderson College where he spent only a year before transferring to Taylor University. It was there that he finally graduated in 1959 with a major degree in English under his belt and also a minor in music.
Following his graduation, he continued with music but this time around, he also took a job as a teacher. Soon afterward, he got married and the pressure of trying to combine music, family, and his teaching job started taking a toll on him, forcing him to leave teaching and give all his attention to music.
Gaither’s career took a turn for the better after the release of his 1964 song, “He Touched Me.” In the years that followed, he released many more songs and albums.
He released many albums with his siblings under the Gaither Trio and 32 more studio albums with Gaither Vocal Band which was started in 1981 and has other members such as Reggie Smith, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb, and Todd Suttles.
