She may not be a Beyonce or an Adele, but Lucia Cifarelli’s hard work and dedication to her craft have given her a unique voice and music style which draws attention to it anytime it is heard.
Born with no superior vocal ability, she took the long hard road to success, developing and honing her skills as she matured into a fine artiste. Let us learn more about this unique singer and songwriter, Lucia Cifarelli.
Family and Early Upbringing of Lucia Cifarelli
Lucia was born to the Cifarelli family on September 23, 1970, in Long Island, New York, United States of America. Her father, Albert Cifarelli was a Dentist, while her mother was Barbara Cifarelli. She grew up with 3 other siblings – sisters Leslie and Karen Joy, and brother Charles.
Their father being a Dentist encouraged his children to study hard and make something out of their lives academically, he particularly desired that they would turn out to be scientists or other recognized professionals, but the children probably didn’t get the memo.
Lucia grew up with a father and around uncles that were scientists, and she could have towed their line of career choice since she had no interest in that. Nevertheless, she had her own desire and dream. All she loved and wanted to do all day long was to listen to music and sing.
As she wasn’t naturally gifted with a good singing voice, her determination to be a good singer had her get a job quite early, so she could afford to pay for voice coaching lessons to fulfill her life long dream of being a singer.
Music Career
Lucia began doing what she loves doing best around the early 1990s when she started frequenting the studio recording songs in New York. She teamed up with John DeServio – a bass guitarist and formed a band they called Drill. The band released a self-titled album, alongside a few music videos; a song from the album featured in the film, Empire Records. In 1995, Lucia and John decided to draw the curtains on the band.
In 2000, She joined the band MDFMK, but it was a short-lived one as they only released a self-titled album and were disbanded. She teamed up with Sascha Konietzko and formed the group called Schwein, releasing 2 albums. She was asked to join the band. KMFDM, after the MDFMK project was discontinued, and she is still a member of the band.
She released a solo album titled From the Land of Volcanoes, which had one of its hit singles titled I will which featured on the movie American Pie 2 soundtrack.
Why is there so much pain and sadness in her songs?
Lucia has a very unique style to her music, and though she didn’t start off making music this way, her experiences in life led her down that path.
Lucia’s songs have some sort of mixed emotions in it – with distinct anger, pain, and sadness. She can be heard growling and screaming in her songs, and she attributes this to a very personal tragic event in her life – which was the loss of her dearly beloved elder sister, Leslie.
Lucia and Leslie were very close as kids growing up, and she was probably the major person that supported and encouraged her to keep striving hard to develop her skills and talent as a musician – especially at a point in her life when she considered giving up her dream. Both sisters spent the better part of their early years listening to musicians they both loved like Stevie Wonder, Kate Bush, David Bowie, and others. When they were not listening to music together, they spent their nights dancing away at some of the most groovy nightclubs in town.
Sometime in the early 1990s, Leslie was diagnosed as being HIV positive, and when she passed away due to complications from the then very deadly virus a few years later, the tragic event left Lucia totally devastated, and she felt her world would come to an end. Time however eased a little of her pain and sadness from the loss, but the rest of it bottled all up in her is what she tries to vent out when she sings.
Relationship or Mariage
Lucia’s past relationships are not common knowledge, as she has not been publicly romantically linked with anyone in the past.
She got married to the love of her life, Sascha Konietzko – the producer and founder of the band KMFDM, in July 2005. The couple lives in Hamburg, Germany – which is his beloved hometown. They welcomed their first and only child, Anabella Asia Konietzko, on February 14, 2008, and she was the best Valentine’s Day gift any parent could have wished for.
