Many people come to the limelight for different reasons; for some, it can be linked to their talents while for others is through association with famous spouses or parents. Eduard Einstein is known as the second son of scientists Albert Einstein and Mileva Marić.
On his own, Eduard was a a gifted individual who was good with languages, and music. Through pursuits in those areas, he contributed to compositions. At some point in his life, he was doing medical studies till his dream was cut short by mistreated schizophrenia.
For many decades, Eduard was in a mental asylum till his sad demise in 1965 at the age of 55.
Eduard Einstein Died from Stroke at the Age of 55 in 1965
Albert Einstein’s second son, Eduard died in 1965 after suffering from stroke. At the time, he was 55 years old and he was staying at the psychiatric clinic Burghölzli in Zurich. Eduard’s resting place is at the Hönggerberg cemetery in Zurich.
One would wonder why he was in a psychiatric clinic. It turns out that Eduard was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 21. Two years later, he was institutionalized and this would continue for several years.
Notably, Mileva cared for her youngest child till her death in 1948. After which he spent most of his time at the psychiatric clinic.
More on this, the diagnosis and treatment slowed him in both his professional pursuits as well as personal life.
Claims were made regarding his treatment and diagnosis. Einstein’s biographers claim that the treatment he was given damaged him instead of helping him. His older brother Hans Albert Einstein also held this view. According to him, the treatment affected his memory and cognitive ability.
A Look at Eduard Einstein’s Life Before His Sad Death
Eduard Einstein was born July 28, 1910, in Zurich, Switzerland to Albert Einstein and his first wife, Mileva Marić. Eduard whom his father fondly referred to as Tete(petit) was one of three children born to the couple.
His oldest sister, Lieserl Einstein came a year before Albert and Mileva got married but she did not live to adulthood. However, after his parents separated, he and his brother Hans lived together with their mother in Zurich. Han would later enjoy academic success as a professor of Hydraulic engineering in the US.
Focusing on Eduard, he discovered a flare for music, poetry, and writing at a young age. Like most people, he became so good in these areas. He also had a passion for psychiatry such that he started studying medicine at the tertiary institution.
Sadly, his dream of becoming a professional in the field of psychiatry was cut short after he was diagnosed with schizophrenia.
At first, he tried to balance his studies with the diagnosis and is said to have been motivated by Sigmund Freud. Eduard’s admiration for Freaud was so great that he even hung his picture over his bed.
However, as his health deteriorated, Eduard started skipping classes and eventually dropped out.
Eduard’s Relationship with His Famous Father
Eduard may be popular as Einstein’s son yet they had their share of challenges. As mentioned, he and his brother stayed with their mother after their parents separated, yet, Eduard and Albert are said to have maintained a good correspondence.
In fact, even after Albert got married to his second wife, Elsa Einstein, they remained in touch.
After Albert emigrated to the US in 1933, the father and son never saw each other again. Yet, they are said to have maintained a correspondence. In one letter from Albert to Eduard, he shares fond memories of their playing music while encouraging him about life.
Also, Einstein is said to have worried over Eduard’s health challenges.

Was Eduard Einstein a Father?
From all available records, Albert Einstein’s youngest son, Eduard did not father any children neither are there indications that he ever got married.
Needless to say, he was the uncle to his older brother’s four children. Of this number three, Bernhard Caesar Einstein, David Einstein, and Klaus Martin Einstein were biologically related to Eduard while the only daughter, Evelyn Einstein was adopted.
Notably, only Bernhard and Evelyn survived into adulthood while the others died at a young age. Bernhard was an academic renowned for his work in the field of engineering. the Einstein family is still celebrated through his surviving children who are making names for themselves in different professions.
