Most people are drawn to the most extreme of entertainment, and unsurprisingly the American reality show, Naked and Afraid has provided this and more. The Discovery Channel show ran for 15 seasons during which it showcased the daring journeys of survivalists, but it came at the price of suffering from animal attacks or harsh weather.
On the show, the two contestants in each episode stay in a stranded environment without clothes, food, or water. As we all know, the risk of dangerous animals or the elements makes their need to survive a very daring one.
While none died, there are notable challenges they suffered ranging from infected wounds, tropical illnesses, and hypothermia but there are those attacks that stand out. Running from E.J. Snyder who almost lost his genitals to Steve Ranking, and Manu Taigo, here is all you need to know about the attacks suffered by contestants on the show.
Worst Injuries and Attacks on Naked and Afraid
1. Steve Ranking was Bitten by a pit Viper in 2013
Shortly before the cameras started rolling, hints about the dangers of the show were given during pre-season production. One of the crew members who is credited as producer, Steve Ranking, was bitten by a pit viper in 2013.
He had gone to inspect the place before filming started, however, he is said to have experienced a sharp pain. The pain got worse and he had to be rushed to the hospital.
Following this, his foot started rotting and he had to go through five surgeries before his foot was saved.
2. E. J. Snyder almost Lost His P*nis after falling from a Tree
He was one of the survivalists in the 7th season of the show. E. J. Snyder suffered an injury on his penis after falling off a tree and into the swarm. The fall was quite serious as it caused lacerations to his genitals.
The implication of this was that he may suffer from an infection and likely lose his penis. As a result of this, he was advised to leave the show and get patched up by a nurse at the hospital or risk infection by staying and getting patched by the medics.
The reality star chose to remain on the show and he was given eight stitches.
3. Matt Wright was Bitten by Bugs
During the third season, Matt Wright was forced to tap out of the show due to an infected foot. He was bitten by bugs and received medication to prevent infection. At first, everything seemed to be working well until it was discovered that there was a flesh-eating bacteria in the affected area.
He realized that he might lose his foot if the area became reinfected and it spread. Unsurprisingly, he pulled out of the show to attend to his injury.
4. Amber Hargrove
Africa may be known for its warm climates however, Hargrove found out that it can cost someone their lives. She suffered from hypothermia during the first season of Last One Standing shot in South Africa.
Amber and her partner found themselves in the middle of chilly nights but things turned for the worse when her body temperature kept dropping till the medical team eventually intervened thereby forcing her to leave the competition.
5. Samantha Ohl Suffered from Hypothermia
Ohl is another contestant who almost lost her life to hypothermia. In her case, she appeared in the 8th season shot in the Croatian mountains. Samantha may have forgotten the basic survival skill of sharing body heat when caught up in a rainstorm, but the consequences were grave.
Things turned for the worse when her body temperature dropped so low that it got to the second stage of hypothermia. Notably, this stage is marked by slurred speech, staggering, and inability to walk. The medics were so scared that she would experience organ failure. Thankfully, she was taken to a hospital.

6. Manu Toigo Suffered from Derengue after Attacks by Mosquitoes

Taking the cameras to Panama in the Second season of Naked and Afraid, we experience another life-threatening attack that makes all the hype about the show real. This time around, Manu Toigo was attacked by mosquitoes.
It soon became an emergency when she developed symptoms of dengue fever such as severe headaches, fever, nosebleeds, and bleeding gums.
In most instances, if not treated, dengue is so fatal. Thankfully, the survivalist was given immediate treatment and has since recovered from it.
7. Sam Mouzer was Burnt on the P*nis
In another instance of attacks suffered on Naked and Afraid, UK contestant Sam Mouzer got burned on his p*nis. While he referred to it as his ‘little soldier’s helmet’, not everyone would find it funny when their genitalia suffers from an attack.
In his case, Sam gets burned when the coal pops from the fire he and his partner and lands on the tip of his p*nis. He takes it in stride and gets medical attention from the medical team.
