Nick Koster, a South African former rugby player tragically died at the age of 34 on July 12, 2023. Prior, Koster who was born Nicholas R. Koster started his career playing for Bishops College and later the Stormers of Cape Town and other teams like Bath and Bristol. After his professional career ended, he played for the amateur team at Cambridge University Rugby.
While his death will remain a painful one, his memory will remain cherished by those who survived him including his wife, Jeannie Koster.

While reacting to the news, the former Springbok assistant coach, Gary Gold expressed how devastated he was by the loss of ‘one of the best schoolboy rugby players’. As it is, his cause of death was not revealed at the time of filing this report.
Regardless, we learned that he was 34 years old at the time considering that Nick was born on February 22, 1989, to Lana-anne Koster in Robertson, South Africa.
He Started Playing Rugby at the Age of 6
According to reports, the South African-born started playing the game when he was 6 years old. At the time, it was just another event in the farming neighborhood he grew up in. It was not till he enrolled at Bishops College that he took it seriously.
Thus, he was part of the lineup for the alma mater’s first rugby team. Koster played for the XV team in 2006 and 2007 alongside professional players like Martin Muller and Matthew Turner. Due to the impressive performance, he gave while playing collegiate, he was called up to the South African national under-18 rugby union team.
Unsurprisingly, he made a career breakthrough at the age of 19 when he made his Currie Cup debut and got picked by the Barbarians. With this invitation to play at Wembley, Nick had more exposure leading to his formal entry into the Super Rugby league when he debuted for the Stormers in 2009. Despite the high hopes for Nick, he had a setback caused by a knee injury that reduced his playtime. While this injury plagued him for the rest of his career, he did not allow it to set him back as can be witnessed in his return in 2010. After playing for the team for three years, he left.
In 2012, he was signed to Bath where he spent one eventful season that saw him make 11 appearances. After this, He moved to Bristol in 2013 and remained with the team till 2017. During his time there, he showcased his skills by playing 62 games as a flanker for the team.

Koster Played for the Amateur Team at Cambridge University
After a busy year at Bristol, he moved to Cambridge University for a Master’s Studies in Social Innovation. As an experienced player, his love for the game soon brought him back to the field where he joined the University’s amateur team for the 2017-2018 season.
For an amateur team, Nick’s wealth of experience was an added advantage and soon enough, he was made the captain of the team in 2018. Subsequently, he retired from the game within the same year.
The South African-born Former Rugby Player is Survived by His Wife
Till his death, the former rugby player who played flanker or eighth-man position was married to Jeannie since 2015. Like Nick, she also hails from South Africa and attended Stellenbosch University in Cape Town.
Regarding how they met, this remains unclear, yet, Nick’s Facebook profile makes it clear that the two started dating in 2012. Though Jeannie kept a low profile, she gave her husband great support while he was building his career.
When he was made the ambassador for Project Zulu, a Uk based charity that provides educational projects in Madadeni, Jeannie was right beside him. Together with the late player, Jeannie hosted young people during the choir fundraising tour part of the event lineup in 2015 and 2016.
