Mona Hammond was born Mavis Chin in Tweesdie, Jamaica in January 1931 to a Chinese father and a Jamaican mother. As previously stated, she moved to the United Kingdom on a scholarship in her 20s, where she took acting lessons at the City Literary Institute and later won a two-year scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
In the mid-1960s, she began her acting career with a role in Jack of Spades, a musical written by Beaton and Ken S. Hignett. From 1968 until 1989, she appeared on stage in various plays, including The Black Girl in Search of God, The Black Macbeth, and The Importance of Being Honest.
In 1986, she co-founded the Talawa Theatre Company with Yvonne Brewster, Carmen Munroe, and Inigo Espejel.
She made her TV debut in the 1990s with roles in The Sweeney (1976), Wolcott (1980-81), and Juliet Bravo (1985). She also played Blossom Jackson in the BBC soap opera EastEnders and Susu Tully in the British sitcom Desmond’s (1990-94).
Hammond’s later TV credits include Pig Heart Boy (1999), The Crouches (2003-04), Baby Father (2001), Manderly (2005), and Kinky Boots (2006).
