Robert De Niro welcomed his grandson, Leandro, at the age of 60 and now that he is 79, he is dealing with the death of the boy. Leandro was born to the TriBeCa founder’s first daughter, Drena whom he adopted during his first marriage to fellow entertainer, Diahnne Abbott.
Leandro was just 19 when his mother announced the news of his death on July 3, 2023. Before his death, the young man was following in the footstep of his famous actor grandfather. He was featured in movies such as 2005’s The Collection, 2018’s Cabaret Maxime, and A Star is Born.
Leandro De Niro is the First Grandchild of Robert De Niro
Robert De Niro’s first grandchild was born from the relationship between his adopted daughter Drena and Carlos Rodriguez. Carlos is an artist whose romance with De Niro’s daughter led to Leandro’s birth in 2004.
Leandro’s date of birth is June 25, 2004, and he is the first grandchild of The Godfather actor, Robert. He is however not the actor’s first biological grandchild.
Asides from Leandro, Robert has 3 other grandchildren from his biological first child and first son, Raphael’s marriage to his ex-wife Claudine DeMatos. The other grandchildren are named Nicholas, Ella, and Alexandria.
Consequently, Leandro was the only child of Drena and Carlos together.
What Caused Leandro De Niro Rodriquez’s Death?
Leandro De Niro was found dead on a chair on July 2, 2023. This discovery was made by his friend in the New York apartment. The friend hadn’t heard from him for days and decided to check up on him in the apartment.
On Monday, July 3, 2023, Drena De Niro, Leandro’s mother confirmed the news of his death. She made the official announcement on her Instagram account via a sad tribute to him.
Robert’s adopted daughter Drena did not reveal the cause of the death though. According to TMZ, there was also no obvious sign of any cause of death. Therefore an autopsy would have to reveal what may have led to the 19-year-old’s death.
His father, Carlos also went into grief by posting a dark image on his Instagram account. He didn’t say anything else other than a comforting message to Drena on her own post.
Condolences have since begun to pour in for the entire De Niro/Rodriguez family.

Leandro was an Aspiring Actor
Following the path of his mother, uncle, and grandfather, Leandro had proven to have a knack for acting. Possibly, he got bit by the acting bug that bit his 2-time Academy Award-winning grandfather.
His mother, Drena was a one-time model, DJ, actress, producer, and director. One of his uncles, Julian, is also an actor.
When Robert De Niro’s first grandchild was still a baby, he was featured in the 2005 movie The Collections. He played the part of ‘Kid in Cableman’ in the movie in which he starred alongside his mother.
13 years later, he was again cast in the movie Cabaret Maxime where he played the role of ‘The Kid’. A Star is Born – 2018 also saw Leandro making an appearance as Leo Stone. His mother was also part of the cast of this movie and she interpreted the role of Paulette Stone.
