He was born in March 1945, in Los Angeles alongside his older brother and oscar-nominated actor Ryan O’Neal, to his parents Charles Eldridge O’Neal, a novelist-screenwriter, and Patricia Ruth Olga (née Callaghan), an actress.

Kevin’s mother Patricia Ruth Olga (née Callaghan) was an actress who was born on September 5, 1907, in Alameda, Alameda County, California, to Richard Edward Callahan and Mathilde Pius. It was alleged that she quit acting to raise her children. She died on October 27, 2003, in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, California, at the age of 96.
