Zack Estrin was an American writer, producer, and showrunner who died on September 23, 2022, after a cardiac arrest. His death was confirmed by WME, a talent agency that had represented him for more than 25 years.
Prior to his death, the Prison Break (2005) and Lost in Space (2018) writer-producer had enjoyed great acclaim in the cause of his career of over two decades.
A Look Into The Background of Zack Estrin
The former writer and producer was born in Woodland, California in 1971 to Jonathan Estrin, a scriptwriter, and Patricia Estrin. He and his sister Amelia Burstyn(Estrin) spent their childhood in Brooklyn, New York following his parent’s divorce.
He became the stepson of the Hollywood novelist and producer of Cagney and Lacey, Shelley List during her marriage with his father till her death in 1996.
Aside from this, he moved back to California to enroll at the University of Southern California for further studies. It was while in school that he started pursuing a career in the entertainment industry.
Estrin Started his Career During The Movie Boom of the ’90s
Having moved back to California, Estrin went into movie production in the 90s when the industry was experiencing a boom. His earliest work was on the 1998 American Fantasy drama Charmed which he served as the writer and producer.
The television series which ran till 2012 was quite successful in that it had a cult following. At the time he was working in Charmed, he also worked on Dawson’s Creek and Tru Calling.
His next big work was the award-winning television series, Prison Break which ran between 2005 to 2017 in five seasons. He is described as an amazing writer that producers and executives loved to work with due to his ability to put great dialogue and structure into his work.

At his death, Zack was married to Kari Estrin. The date of their wedding and other details about their marriage is not quite known as the couple chose to keep their personal life away from the media.
Notwithstanding their marriage of many years are blessed with two daughters, Chloe Grace Estrin and Charlotte Estrin.
While the Lost In Paradise executive producer shared little snippets of his family during vacations on his social media, one of his daughters, Chloe is following in her father’s footsteps in the industry.
Per IMDB, she is credited for Lost in Space and the 2019 thriller The Savage Tales of Frank MacGuffin in which she plays the role of Lily, a starring cast member.

Zack Estrin’s death on September 23, 2022, at the age of 51 was quite shocking as he was previously perceived to be fit till he suffered a cardiac arrest while out jogging at Hermosa beach. On the ill-fated day, the Brooklyn-raised writer was said to have gone about his daily activities which included a jogging morning routine.
However, things took a turn for the worse when he allegedly had a cardiac arrest. At this writing, that is the given cause of his death since no autopsy reports have been released.
His death was later confirmed by his talent agency, WME. The agency’s president, Ari Greenburg maintained that the dead writer and producer had been with them for more than 25 years. Also, he revealed that Estrin’s successful career included him mentoring others.
Estrin’s family also expressed their shock while reacting to the news of his death. Apparently, he had a close relationship with the surviving members of his family which include his father, wife, mother, daughters, and sister. The Estrin family has described him as a loving person who wanted to make everyone happy.
Zack Estrin’s death is another sad ending to a man who produced and wrote some of the great stories on film. While he kept his personal life quiet and away from the controversies in the industry, dying at the age of 51 makes his case one among 90% of fatal cardiac arrests in the US.
